ABOUT THE COURSE
The Masterclass with Johannes Schlaefli and the Ensemble of the Basel Chamber Orchestra is an intensive three-day conducting workshop held in Basel, Switzerland, at the cultural center Don Bosco. Designed for professional conductors and advanced conducting students, this course focuses on working with a high-quality chamber ensemble of 13 players to develop technical precision, rehearsal strategies, and leadership styles.
The program is limited to exactly six active participants to ensure extensive individual attention and generous podium time. The course curriculum features daily rehearsals, score analysis sessions, video reviews, and discussion of interpretive approaches, with a minimum of 120 minutes of guaranteed podium time with the ensemble for each participant. Active participants also have the opportunity to apply for sponsorships and scholarships from private sponsors after being selected.
The masterclass is taught in English and German and concludes on the final day with a public farewell apéro or meet-and-greet event. Rehearsal works include Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring for 13 instruments and Johannes Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 arranged for ensemble by David Walter.
