ABOUT THE COURSE
LEAD! Lab Bergen is an intensive three-day masterclass and workshop for conductors and composers led by conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste and composer Magnus Lindberg, hosted alongside the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra at Grieg Hall in Bergen, Norway. The lab focuses on the crucial collaborative process between composers, conductors, and ensembles when interpreting and performing new music, alongside professional development topics such as networking, branding, and commissioning.
Five active conductors and five active composers will be selected. While active participation does not include podium time with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, participants gain open observation access to all orchestral rehearsals. Active conductors receive a 20-minute video analysis session with Jukka-Pekka Saraste, while active composers receive individual 20-minute lessons with Magnus Lindberg. Observers are also welcome to attend all rehearsals, seminars, and Q&A sessions.
The program includes interactive discussions on interpreting contemporary scores, career planning sessions with Paul Hughes, and seminars on navigating the music profession with Sarah Osa. Applications are open to participants of all ages and nationalities.
