ABOUT THE COURSE
The II Wind Band Conducting Workshop organized by the Banda de Música de la Comarca de Sarria will take place during the weekend of January 31 and February 1 at the facilities of the CEIP Plurilingüe do Páramo, with an educational proposal focused on the technical improvement of conductors and the reinforcement of the communicative relationship between those who conduct and those who perform. The course is structured over two days with a dual objective, aimed at perfecting the preparation of professional conductors and working on direct interaction with the musicians as a key element for the proper functioning of a wind band.
The sessions will alternate theoretical content directed at the conductors and taught by David Fiuza with practical periods in which the wind band will act as a real environment to put the acquired knowledge into practice. In these practical sessions, the opportunity will also be offered to some musicians to take the baton for the first time, as an initiation to conducting, favoring a broader and shared understanding of the musical process.
One of the fundamental axes of the workshop is to delve into the communication between the two essential elements of a wind band, the conductor and the musicians, understood from both a technical and emotional point of view. The organization points out that fluid communication between both parties is essential to achieve a solid understanding that translates into effective joint work and a better artistic result for the ensemble.
The working repertoire includes works such as Música y vinos, by Manuel Morales Martínez; A viaxe de Teucro, by Carlos Rodríguez Torres; A Lenda de Montelongo, by Bernardo del Río; Music for a Festival, by Philip Sparke; Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral, from the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, arranged by L. Cailliet; and October, by Eric Whitacre. The selection of these pieces represents an increase in the usual difficulty level of the BMCS repertoire, with the aim of bringing compositions of greater complexity to the public throughout the season and continuing to advance in the musical trajectory of the wind band.
